Unfinished Self-Portrait with Keith

I am working on a painting for the back cover of my Moleskine.  I figured it would be nice to finish it before I sent it off, but it is slow.  I am making my own acrylic paints with pigments from France my daughter brought me from her visit there.

First coat of paint:

Working at the dining room table:

We had more than a foot of snow and it was 11 below zero--I couldn't get to my "studio."  It's a little crowded and cluttered.  (Okay, it;s a LOT crowded and cluttered.)  The little vials are the dry pigments from France.

The photograph I am copying was taken December 28, 2013 by Harry Teichert at the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House.  I hope to finish it soon and mail it off.

Self Portrait as the artist looking at the future

Of course, this is me YOUNGER than I am now (not really me at all). Done in Roma's with markers and pens and a little colored pencil. The top one is the newer version--I'm never sure when I am done with a piece and I decided the lighting wasn't right on it. The bottom one, for inquiring minds, is the original.

The third picture is me last night with a hastily rendered copy of Cezanne's 3 Skulls done at the DIA in ordinary pencil. They have drawing sessions and provide seats, paper, pencils and easels every Friday night. And I think Sunday afternoons, too. It;'s the first time I've done it. If I do it again, I may bring my own pencils, stubs etc. It was a huge paper to fill in a short time with a pencil, and I didn't get it quite right--but I had a good time and looked CAREFULLY at the painting--more carefully than ever before.

below is a pocket item for Roma's pocket, it is a super-quick mini sketch of BB, my husband Keith. I did it last night on a very small "art pad." (Sm Assignment notebook-size.)

On my screen, the image is larger than the actual sketch. It is done in pencil, markers and colored pencil.

self-portrait sketch, age 8

When I was eight years old, my father took me on a long train ride down to New York City to go to the opera at the Met. We saw the Magic Flute, and the thing I remember most about it was Papageno, the bird man. I also remember how everything was gold and dark red velvet and how I was made to wear a frilly pink dress and bows in my hair. I hated pink. But I was awed by the Met. I have never been back and that was about 55 years ago.

This is a sketch with pencil and colored pencil in Peggy's sketcbook.

Self Portrait with Hawk Skull Detail

Self Portrait with Hawk Skull Detail, by Mary Stebbins Taitt. This is a "large detail" from a 5 x 7 water color "painting" that I did tonight for my water media class. You can see the whole painting at Imagik if interested. It's supposed to be a self-portrait, but it doesn't really look like me. (I like it anyway, in spite of its flaws.) (The little red spots are from pomegranate at supper! Aiee!)

Self Portrait with Dream I, Detail

Self Portrait with Dream I, Detail, by Mary Stebbins Taitt. This is a detail from a larger water color painting I did for a take home-assignment in my water media class. I'm not thrilled with it, but then again, I'm rarely thrilled with my work. So here it is. This detail is about 3 x 5. Click here to see the WHOLE painting. Click the image to see the detail larger.

Self Portrait of the artist as a Shaman (Shawoman)

This is a self portrait which you could theoretically buy at Imagekind. Why anyone would want to is beyond me. WHne I get the details figured oiut, I will post them.

October Wind SP

OK, here is yet another version of my October Wind Self portrait. I'll probably stop playing with it when I get one I really like. One that says, "this is it."

Or not.

I was about 19 when the photo from which this painting was made was taken. This version is a little gaudily bright. Oh-oh, I am feeling the urge to dabble some more. Click image to view larger.

Self-portrait by Moonlight

This was an unintentional self-portrait. The camera is sitting on the rocks at my feet and I am taking a moonlight picture of the little beach at Lakeshore. The moon is at my back. It didn't seem QUITE that bright, LOL!

I would normally post this to my self portraits blog, but I am thinking of consolidating and getting rid of some of my blogs. It's too much work for me and too confusing for everyone else.
