Helena asks, "When you were a child, which crayon color was your favorite?" and I reply:
"My favorite color as a young child was red and then it switched to green as I got older and loved nature and trees. But I also loved the NAMEs the colors, like "ochre," "burnt umber" and "burnt sienna." What great names. I always had to use burnt umber, burnt sienna and ochre so I drew lots of trees with complex bark, even as a fairly young child!
I also like the names of khaki and ecru!

I discovered an interesting list of lost crayola colors, including the names of ones that I remember from my childhood!!!

Naples yellow is the color of my walls.
Greetings, HPY! I like yellow walls, so cheery! Great for kitchens and bathrooms. I am not sure exactly what Naples Yellow is, though. Whether it is dark or light. Or what.
It's a light one, and it's a name of a yellow color, just like burnt sienna. I learned all those names ages ago when I was interested in painting (oil). And I guess I have forgotten most of them.
But when I wanted to paint some of my walls I stumbled upon this nice yellow color, with the name that remembered me of so many beautiful moments.
So Naples yellow was the color I chose. Surely partly because of the name.
That's something I can understand! :-D
It must be really pretty!
I just read an article in The New Yorker about a tribe in the Amazon that doesn't have words for colors. When they refer to a color they simply relate it to something they have seen. So if there is something green, they may say that it looks like a leaf. Very interesting.
It would be sort of fun to name colors after objects, leaf, sky, fire, lady-slipper, Mary-Skin, Andre-skin, Keith-eyes, Nadine-eyes.
