this little art-card. Here's my interpretation of the piece:
It demonstrates old
age, dying and death. The ropes and "pulley" (nails?) represent the
machineries of time and life. The weight represents the constant pressure of
time and the weight of the inevitability of death. The pitcher is the portion
of time of one's life pouring out. The bowl of life is fragile and balanced
delicately almost half off its shelf--the water is pouring on the side
precariously hung over space and "rocks" (something that will break
it when it falls). The darkness and sunset tells the viewer of the time of day
(life). And the bowl is nearly full, the pitcher nearly empty, time is running
out. We all feel the pressure of the inevitability of death and the fragility
of life, so the art speaks to us.
